taking a gap year

Some people may think taking nine months to attend South Carolina School of Leadership will cause them to fall behind. We think just the opposite. During SCSL students will be taught spiritual disciplines, life skills, and be equipped with leadership skills that will give them a distinct advantage. They will also be taught the importance of being responsible for their actions and reactions. It’s an investment that will pay rich dividends.

As students grow in their relationship with God, they better understand themselves and become more focused in their vocational pursuit. For some this will save the expense of changing majors several times once they attend college. This can also result in better grades as students begin to pursue their God-given passion.

We encourage you to read the following “gap year” articles. We believe that students who choose to take a “gap year” at SCSL will become more mature spiritually, relationally, and emotionally. SCSL is an incredible opportunity for all students, especially for those who are at a place of transition. Students willl grow in Christ, have the chance to better understand themselves, meet others from across the nation, and enjoy traveling.

why school of leadership?

Statistics have reported that up to eighty-eight percent of youth raised in the church fall away from their faith when they go to college. When students attend the School of Leadership, birthed out of the discipleship-based foundation of Master's Commission, it gives them an opportunity to pursue God like they've never pursued Him before. It allows students the chance to solidify their relationship with the Lord, develop spiritual disciplines necessary for a successful Christian walk, and establish a Biblical worldview. SCSL isn't a magical world where lives are suddenly changed, but it is a world where Biblical truths and principles are taught and modeled. If applied, these truths and principles can change a life forever.

The School of Leadership is a laboratory for life. Students have an opportunity to learn and develop leadership skills, confrontational skills, communication skills, and work skills. The character of each student is revealed and built through their interaction with one another and through their involvement in the many responsibilities and ministries of the intense world in which they will be a part. As a result the students end the year with a newfound confidence in the Lord and in themselves. Many of them will have the courage to step out and pursue personal dreams they would have never had the courage to pursue before.

South Carolina School of Leadership also gives students an opportunity to discover the destiny that God has for their lives. We truly believe that destinies are discovered, not decided. Many young adults basically throw away their freshman and sophomore years in college by living the party life. Majors are often changed at least once or twice and some never fully realize their life's passion until they graduate from college. As students pursue God at SCSL, it allows God the opportunity to reveal His destiny and dreams to the student. Students are taught spiritual truths and disciplines that well help them continue to discover their personal God-given destiny throughout their journey in life, rather than just filling a slot in the world.

When looking for a post-high school option for taking a gap year, remember that not all programs, whether Christian or secular, are created equal. Everything truly rises and falls on the leadership. Make sure you take the time to investigate each program thoroughly.
